- Sack catalogue description: Hepplewhite mahogany four-drawer tambour desk, the drawer fronts and center door are fronted by flame satinwood veneer, the door is flanked by tambours enclosing pigeonhole compartments and drawers; the oval brasses are the original, French feet, the piece exhibits a rare deep brown patina of great depth and mellowness. Ex-collection Hermann Clarke; ex-collection Israel Sack, Inc., 1941; ex-collection Charles K. Davis. Note: Hermann Clarke was one of the most discriminating collectors of the Boston area in the 1920s; every piece in his collection was the finest as exemplified by this example, the Philadelphia piecrust table no. P4354 in the brochure, etc. He was the owner of the unique silver candlesticks, snuffer and tray combination; Harold Sack bought this from him in 1941. Mr. Clarke sold them because he was sure the country was going to seed because of the staggering national debt; the set was sold to Mr. Charles K. Davis and is now in Winterthur.
