Notes:: “Ngọc Hoa Cổ Tích Truyện” is a Nôm poem written in 6-8 verses that tells a faithful love story of Phạm Tải and Ngọc Hoa. Ngọc Hoa is a daughter of a wealthy family, beautiful and smart. When she is 13 years old, she is asked a hand in marriage by some wealthy families but she refuses. One day, Phạm Tải, a poor student, comes to her house to ask for foods. Being touched by his talent and virtue, she falls in love with him and later marries him. Biền Điện, due to a failure to marry Ngọc Hoa, carves a statute of her and presents to the King Trang Vương. Ngọc Hoa is forced to go the palace. Trang Vương tries so hard to steal her heart. All his effort is in vain. He decides to kill Phạm Tải. Ngọc Hoa is heartbroken and upset. She cuts her face to make it look ugly. Trang Vương still finds it attractive and pursues his goal. Having no choice, she pretends to accept the King’s proposal on a condition that she would mourn her husband for 3 years. After 3 years, she commits suicide. Going to the underworld, she meets her husband. The two submit an accusation of Trang Vương to the King of underworld. As a result, Trang Vương is thrown into oil cauldron. Phạm Tải and Ngọc Hoa are resurrected. Phạm Tải becomes the King. The two live happily ever after. The poem was published by Thịnh Văn Đường publishing house in 1871.
Truyện thơ nôm lục bát,kể lại mối tình chung thuỷ của Phạm Tải và Ngọc Hoa:Ngọc Hoa là con gái một nhà giàu họ Trần. Nàng thông minh lại có nhan sắc, mới 13 tuổi đã có nơi quyền quý đến cầu hôn, nhưng nàng đều không ưng. Một hôm, Phạm Tải, một học trò nghèo đến nhà nàng xin ăn. Thấy chàng có tài, có đức, nàng đem lòng yêu dấu và sau đó lấy làm chồng. Biện Điền vì không cưới được Ngọc Hoa, đã tạc tượng nàng dâng cho Trang Vương. Ngọc Hoa bị bắt vào triều. Trang Vương dùng mọi cách mà vẫn không trinh phục nổi trái tim của nàng, bèn chuyển sang giết Phạm Tải. Ngọc Hoa tức giận tự rạch mặt mình cho xấu đi, nhưng Trang Vương vẫn một mực đeo đẳng. Nàng thấy vậy, đành vờ chấp thuận, hẹn 3 năm sau mãn tang chồng sẽ lấy hắn. Đến ngày mãn tang, nàng đã tự vẫn để giữ lòng chung thủy với chồng. Dưới Âm phủ, Ngọc Hoa cùng Phạm Tải làm đơn kiện lên Diêm Vương, tố cáo tội ác của Trang Vương. Kết quả là Trang Vương bị ném vào vạc dầu, Phạm Tải cùng Ngọc Hoa trở về dương thế và chàng đã trị vì đất nước thay Trang Vương...Truyện do Thịnh Văn Đường in năm Tự Đức 24 (1871)
