500 AD - 1499 AD - Notes:
- The paludamentum over a long tunic, both trimmed in classic borders. Strong emphasis is placed at the hemline opening. As befits the ruler of the Holy Roman Empire, the garment relates to the royal Byzantine styles.
- Abstract:
- Men dress in a short version of the kirtle. Under it are a linen tunic and short breeches. Hose cover the legs and are held up by ties which are fastened to the waist of the breeches. Predominantly for soldiers, the surcote is a tunic which is over the kirtle and/or mail. It is cut narrower than the kirtle and, to allow for movement, has a slit at the center front or sides. Elbow-length sleeves are tied on or cut-in-one. The cyclas is another serviceable garment. Related to the surcote, it is sleeveless and has deeply cut armholes. A bliaud for men is without a corselet. It is laced through the torso. Sometimes it has a separate full skirt which is mid-calf or longer in length. The paludamentum is the most popular overgarment. It is fastened either as before, on the right shoulder, or in the new style with a cord across the center front. Functional garments still include the palla, the paenula, and a variety of mantles. Shoes are soft and have a slightly pointed toe.
