Abstract:
Dress of the High Italian Renaissance is distinctly soft, loose, and easy. Its silhouette is narrower and more natural than the silhouette of the Early Renaissance. The round gown, an important new garment, is alone or with an overgarment. It has a separate, short-waisted bodice and a straight, gathered skirt. The neckline is low, round, and wide. Characteristically Italian, sleeves are usually separate from the gown and laced or tied in place. The chemise is pulled through the openings between the ties to make little puffs. Often the sleeve fabric and color are different from the gown. A stiff overgarment like a tabard appears in Italy. Narrow at the shoulders, it is slightly shaped over the bosom and then widens at the hem. It has an open V neck and seam which makes a small lapel. Fabric for the overgarment is usually rich brocade.
