- A soft kerchief is draped over the shoulders, and a large shawl is draped over the arm. Notice the scoop hat.
- Abstract:
- During the directoire, in a dramatic break with the artificial silhouette, women imitate Greco-Roman styles by draping themselves with sheer white fabrics. Underneath they are nude or only in pink hose. The baby dress or chemise, copied from children's clothing, is also important. Made of sheer fabric, it has a drawstring at the neck and just under the bust. Skirts of both the draped gown and chemise are long and trailing; the train is carried over an arm. A second train is often added by tucking an extra piece of fabric into the belt. For day wear sometimes a fichu fills in the neckline. The First Empire gown is a development of the chemise. Its short bodice is cut separately of shaped pieces. Skirt fullness is arranged at the back; occasionally a gore is inserted and allows for a train. Unadorned at first, gradually the gown is trimmed at the bottom of the hem.
