Creator:
Donatello, ca. 1386-1466
Published/Created:
Piazza della Signoria, Florence, Tuscany, Italy
ca. 1459
Date Depicted:
ca. 1990's
500 AD - 1499 AD
Materials:
bronze
Notes:
Donatello's other commission (from Cosimo de' Medici) for the Bargello palace, this time for a fountain in the back garden, was a more easily explicable group, also on an Old Testament theme, Judith Slaying Holofernes (Florence, Piazza della Signoria). It is an allegory of Humility triumphing over Pride, as is known from a lost, but recorded, inscription.
