Notes:
Of great significance for Rhind's mature style was his design of 1838 for Glasgow’s Scott Monument in George Square, which brought him in contact with the nascent school of Scottish sculptors and Alexander Handyside Ritchie in particular. Ritchie executed the statue of Scott crowning the column. Rhind's subsequent buildings were distinguished by the outstanding merit of their sculptural enrichments, which were executed by Ritchie and his studio. The square (1781) was named after George III, a statue of whom was originally intended to occupy the center of the square, but it was decided instead to commemorate Sir Walter Scott, which was the first ever memorial dedicated to him.
