David Barr and Sergio De Guisti are the men behind the most recent contribution to the public art scene, Transcending, a gift from Detroit's labor unions to commemorate the city's 300th birthday. Barr taught briefly at WSU and spent nearly 40 years teaching art design, drawing and sculpture at Macomb Community College. He won WSU's Distinguished Alumni Award in 1983. De Guisti was an art history and studio art teacher at Wayne State for 15 years and was a visiting artist at the University of Michigan and the University of Wisconsin. He received WSU's Arts Achievement Award in 1996. Barr designed the 59-foot-high Transcending sculpture, located on Woodward Avenue near Hart Plaza. It consists of two stainless-steel half arcs mounted on a cement platform encircled by split boulders, each supporting a bronze relief depicting De Guisti's interpretation of scenes from Detroit's labor history. Inscribed within the main arcs is a quote from Martin Luther King Jr., "The arc of history bends toward justice.
