Notes:
The richness of the dress reflects the growing power of the church. The Pope is in a red chasuble over a brocaded dalmatica.
Abstract:
Color becomes symbolic in religious dress. Red is the official color for cardinals, green for archbishops, purple for bishops, and black for priests. In 1245 a hat is adopted which has a wide brim and low, round crown. Strings tie loosely under the chin and end in tassels, the number of tassels indicating rank. Priests have one tassel per string, bishops three. Seven tassels designate a cardinal. The bishop's mitre is taller than in previous centuries. From 1316 the papal tiara has three tiers. More narrow, the chasuble is still flowing and graceful. The cope remains the same.
