This elegant, black velvet hat is trimmed with large ostrich plumes. Imported from South Africa, plumes are used in dresses and accessories.
Abstract:
As the late 1890s begin, hair is drawn up smoothly into a bun at the top of the head. An occasional fringe of bangs is the only relief. Hairstyles widen as the sleeves become more full. Rats (false hairpieces) are arranged under the hair to fill it out. Wisps of curls fall along the hairline. Hats are large and elegant. They are held in place on the wide hairdos with large hat pins.
