Older men in Elizabethan hairstyles and beards. The ruff, though still starched, falls slightly away from the face.

Abstract:

When the ruff falls, hair is grown into long, soft curls. In the lovelock style, it is tied to one side. Mustaches are thin. Occasionally there is a van Dyck beard which ends in a point. At the beginning of the period the stiff, high-crowned steeple is popular. The Puritans adopt it, adding a plain hatband and austere buckle for decoration. By 1630 the fashionable hat has a low crown and a wide, stiff brim. It is decorated with a jeweled hatband and long ostrich plumes. Eventually losing its stiffness, one side of the brim is fastened to the crown with a brooch. Most hats are black or dark in color. The ruff is seven to nine inches wide, unstarched and drooping. It is replaced by a wide, square collar finished in lace. A small starched ruff or small collar is associated with conservatives throughout the period.
