Abstract:
During the directoire wigs disappear entirely. Hair falls raggedly around the face and shoulders. By 1800 the look is of studied confusion. Back hair is trimmed to the contour of the head. Front hair either is brushed forward and set in ringlets or falls in wisps over the face. Sideburns appear. The top hat is introduced. Made of brushed beaver, in its early form it tapers at the top of the crown and has a narrow brim with a slight roll. The bicorne, seldom worn, is usually carried under the arm; it remains almost exclusively a military hat or an accessory to court dress. As the hair is shortened, a new emphasis is placed on the neck. The cravat becomes wide. It is wound around the neck and tied in front with a bow. A white stock is with or without a black band (the solitaire). Varying in height, collar often ends high on the jaw, the points showing above the cravat.
