The comfortable peg-top trousers emphasize the small waist and rounded hip line.
Abstract:
By 1822 the male silhouette is a feminine hourglass form. Tailcoats are common. Most fashionable is a full-skirted frock coat which ends just above the knees. The chest is padded and the waist pinched. A collar with a deep roll surrounds the face. Sleeves are gathered into the armhole. The frock coat is lined in a gay color. Buttons are now large. The waistcoat is colorful, sometimes even flowered. It is cut to follow the lines of the coat to the waist, often lacing tightly at the back to heighten the silhouette. The pantaloon is full, gathered into a waistband, and tightly fitted through the legs. Its length varies: for evening wear it is ankle length and finished in a row of buttons; for day wear, long enough to strap under the shoes. The one fashionable hat is a top hat of brushed beaver which tapers out from the brim.
