- Side hair is frizzed or curled in ringlets. Top hair is drawn straight back into a bun.
- Abstract:
- As the high pompadour falls, hair widens at the sides. It is center parted and flat on top, with the forehead trimmed in a fringe of curls. Side hair is frizzed or curled in ringlets. Back hair is twisted into a bun. The most popular headcoverings are the cardinal, a red knitted hood, and a simple kerchief, which is knotted loosely under the chin. The coif remains in style. The steeple hat is over the coif and other simple hoods. Ruffs are large, the very large ones called millstones. A flat collar which falls over the shoulders replaces the ruff in the 1640's.
