Sometimes the natural hair is grown into the long style. Large ribbon bows, which indicate the device of a heraldic order, are placed under the cravat.
Abstract:
Faces tend to be clean shaven. Sometimes there are pencil-thin mustaches and small beards. Heads are shaved to accommodate the new peruke, or periwig. Wide, full and curly, it is natural colored, parted in the center and shoulder length. Hats are everywhere. By the manner in which they are used, by their shape, size and color, they are clear indicators of social class. The most common hat, based on a cardinal's hat, has a wide brim and low crown. Usually it is made of felt or beaver. For private times indoors the shaved head is covered with a turban, a tasseled stocking hat, or a coif. The collar is wide and flat. It has a box pleat under the chin and is narrow at the shoulders. Around 1680 the collar is replaced by the neckcloth, a long rectangle which is folded and wrapped around the neck, where it is held in place by a ribbon, the ends hanging free. The Steinkirk cravat, a twisted version of the neck-cloth, appears in 1692. Originally the horseback rider ties the cravat so it can be quickly released and used to bind the leg of a fallen horse. Sometimes a large ribbon bow is under the cravat.
