Abstract:
As the period begins, gowns have a smooth, well-fitted bodice. A soft bell-shaped skirt is supported by layers of crinolines. Sleeves are attached from a drop shoulder line and follow the natural line of the arm. They end just below the elbow or at the wrist. Gradually they widen at the bottom into a bell shape like a skirt. As multiple petticoats are added, the skirt becomes wide and full. When their weight can barely be supported, bell-shaped hoops appear which allow the skirts to become even wider without additional discomfort. By 1865 the hoop is flattened in front, its fullness pushed to the back. The skirt is separate from the bodice with fullness pleated in. From 1855, with the introduction of the sewing machine, the skirt is trimmed profusely. As the skirt widens, wraps are replaced by shawls. Sacklike coats are developed in a variety of lengths.
