Abstract:
The silhouette is more slender and natural in line. In the 1770s, for the first time a collar is added to the coat. It has two forms: the standing collar and the turned-down collar. The coat fits the body neatly. In some cases the bottom front edge is turned up in military style; in others the front is cut away from the chest in a long sloping line. Pockets move up on the coat throughout the period. Flaps are moderate in size. From 1760 breeches are invariably fastened over white stockings. They fit tightly and are just long enough to cover the kneecap. Sometimes the calf is padded to make the leg shapely. Embroidered ribbon braces are introduced. Stocks are added to shirts, which are decorated with ruffles of lace. Sometimes an edge is seen over the top of the cravat. The neck-cloth wraps around and also ends in a series of lacy ruffles. Capes are full and have wide, turned-down collars. The heeled shoe continues to evolve into a trimmer and more shapely form. Gaiters or elegant top boots with narrow, turned-down cuffs are primarily for the military.
