Abstract:
The garde-corps is the first overcoat. A garment of mass and dignity, it is long and full throughout the body. Full, capelike sleeves are attached to the shoulders with gauging or cartridge pleating. At the elbow position there is a slash for the arms. A separate cowl collar or hood is put on over the head. When the gardecorps is lined in fur (usually ermine), it is referred to as the pelisson. Older mantles and capes remain, often lined in contrasting colors. Cape fastenings vary from side to center front.
