pastel on paper
Notes:
The wig is tied back and the end placed in a black taffeta bag. This is a good example of a stand collar and shirt ruffles.
Abstract:
The wig is always dressed away from the face. Back hair is tied with a bow. Side hair is arranged over the ears in one or two curls. After 1780 wigs are often unpowdered. For court occasions the powdered wig remains stylish until 1810; thereafter it is limited to servants and judicial magistrates. Faces are smooth shaven. The tricorne is now smaller and flatter. The bicorne appears for military dress, eventually passing into civilian use.
