Abstract:
The kirtle (qamurra), with its long, tight sleeves and rounded neckline, is the basic garment. It is worn alone or with an overgarment. The late Italian version of the houppelande (cioppa) is the most important overgarment. It is shaped like a cone, narrow at the shoulders and full at the hem. At the high waistline it is pleated into pipelike folds, which probably are controlled by an inner belt. Sleeves are long, funnel-shaped, and slashed to the front of the armscye. They are lined in fur or in a contrasting color, and the slashed edges are dagged. Unlike the high, fitted and boned collar of the French-Burgundian houppelande, the Italian version has a low stand which dips to a V shape in back. Until it disappears in 1420, the surcote is also over the kirtle.
