Abstract:
Usually hair is neatly bobbed. A full, squarecut beard and turned-down mustache are common. Among younger men the long Italian hairstyles are popular. Hats cover the head both indoors and out. They are removed only in church and in the presence of the king. In order to wear a hat in front of the king, a special dispensation is needed. The most common hat is a flat beret, which comes in all widths. It sits at a jaunty angle, in striking contrast to the square silhouette. Ear flaps, remnants of the coif, are sometimes incorporated into the beret. The coif is still a popular headcovering. Now most often black, it is worn alone or under the beret.
