- Abstract:
- There are many Roman overgarments. Most important are the pallium and the paenula (or casula). The pallium is the same as the Greek himation. Initially for philosophers, it gradually replaces the toga as the basic garment. The paenula (not shown) is a closed, semicircular cloak with a slit at the neck. It is made of leather or heavy wool and is waterproof. The cucullus is a small cape with an attached hood. The paludamentum is the principal military cape of a general or commander-in-chief. Largest of all mantles, it is cut like a primitive half-circle and is dark red, purple, or white. The lacerna, a second military cape, is similar to the chlamys. Made of fine white wool, it is fastened with a pin at the right shoulder and falls six inches below the hip. Its shape appears to be triangular or trapezoidal, with rounded corners at the bottom. The sagum is a practical cloak for all citizens in wartime. It is made of dark-colored, thick wool; sometimes it is striped.
