Abstract:
Previous styles are retained until the mid1850s. Then ringlets and curls disappear. The bun moves downward and is contained in black silk. Front hair is either drawn smoothly back, still covering the ears, or is plaited and encircles the bun. Caps and turbans are for older women. For young women there are bonnets decorated with flowers and ribbons which are bunched on one side. The bonnet shape follows the line of the hair. As the bun moves down, pillboxes are tilted over the forehead and trimmed in feathers.
