- Abstract:
- In the early years of the period hair is dressed casually, if at all. Loosely curled, short locks are most fashionable. Longer hair is brushed forward and rough cut. During the Empire hair is modeled after Greek and Roman styles. It is often clipped short in front and confined in a bun in back. There are many hat styles. The poke bonnet is all brim. A variation, the scoop has a flaring brim and stiff crown in back. The shade bonnet, tied on with ribbons, is flat or shaped like a mushroom. The military shako and other men's styles are adopted. All hats are highly decorated with ribbons, flowers, ruching and/or, most important, ostrich plums.
