- Hair is drawn into a low pompadour, then cut short, three fingers in length. It is softly curled and decorated with delicate flower wreaths and loops of pearls. For formal occasions it is powdered. The most popular hat is the leghorn, a large picture hat of fine yellow straw with broad ribbons. Under the leghorn is the mobcap, its ruffled edge framing the face. Dainty ruffs are made of ribbon or lace. The use of jewelry is restrained.
