Notes:

In response to the general tendency of the 1970s to express more sensual experiences and historical memory, Turnbull returned ca. 1977 to small, modelled sculptures. These suggested torsos, masks and small figures, often echoing museum objects such as arrowheads and cult figurines. These later works, while evoking his sculpture of the 1950s, were more intimate and less dauntingly imposing.
