Lower right of painting: 'By brush of Muto Shui'; Main inscription: 'the lower parts (of the body from the hips) to heels cannot expound a theme. Thus, there appears in the 'Gate of Erection and Change' (Kenkemon) only the upper half of the body. Muso Soseki accuses himself.' Kenkemon is the gate to Zen through provisional methods and instruction; subject to change; to guide the unenlightened 'to erect and change them'
