Mask

Published/Created:
ca. 1900-2000 (possibly)
Physical Description:
15.6 x 12.5 x 6 cm
pole wood, fish glue patination
Notes:
Court and vernacular art in Bali are closely allied, so that the refinement of this piece, which in Java would indicate a court provenance, is not an identifying characteristic. The mask represents one of the five female retainers of the Barong, the gigantic mythical lion figure who represents good in the popular dance depicting the struggle against evil as personified by the female witch, Rangda. Though not of noble rank, the character exhibits the halus (refined) qualities inherent in the simplicity that suggests the power of good that her master embodies.--Jessup, Court Arts of Indonesia, p. 260
