The first Pala d’Oro was commissioned in 976 from workshops in Constantinople by Doge Pietro I Orseolo. The present altarpiece has a 14th-century inscription stating a second version was commissioned by Doge Ordelafo Falier and completed in 1105; it was renovated in 1209 under Doge Pietro Ziani. In 1342–5, under Doge Andrea Dandolo, the altarpiece was remade and given its present form.
