Longxing Temple (Hebei Province): Library, plan and cross section

Published/Created:
China, Hebei Province: Zhengding, Longxing si (Longxing Temple)
ca. 1000 (built)
Notes:
Drawing by Liang Sicheng 梁思成, 1901-1972, and the Institute for Research in Chinese Architecture (1931-1946). Two interior columns are placed out of line to accommodate the revolving cabinet. This irregularity created a structural problem for the floor above, where the central column stands on a girder. The solution was the introduction of a large truss with chords to divert the load of the beam above to the columns at front and rear. Note that the left chord is the extension of the tail of the lever arm (ang).-- A Pictorial History of Chinese Architecture.
