Domus Aurea (Rome, Italy)

Creator:
Severus, fl. ca. 50
Published/Created:
ca. 64-68
Notes:
The direct architectural influence of the Domus Aurea was limited, although it probably inspired Domitian's palace on the Palatine (begun 81 CE). The painted decoration, which is partly attributed to the celebrated painter Famulus, was, however, much more influential. It is among the earliest examples of Fourth Style painting, a development in Roman painting that may have been promoted by Nero himself, and was presumably instrumental in establishing the new fashion. When the Oppian wing began to be explored in the late 15th and the early 16th century, its murals and painted stucco vaults profoundly affected architectural and interior decoration and gave rise to a style known as the 'Grotesque' after the 'caverns' (grotte) that they appeared to adorn.--Grove Dictionary of Art
