1745 - Notes:
- Mary Bulman (from York, Maine) began working these linen hangings after the death of her husband during the battle of Louisburg in 1745. The crewel work patterns and use of tape along the borders of the valances reveal that Mary had been instructed in needlework in the Boston area and had access to drawn patterns and imported wool materials. She personalized these hangings in a way that reveals her loss: along the valances are verses from Isaac Watts's "Meditations in a Grove."--E. Cooke
