Most of our initial understanding of the structure of junctions between cells and their putative function was based on the elegant morphological studies of Drs. Farquhar and Palade. They examined junctions from a wide variety of organisms and identified common patterns of structure indicating evolution of common structure and function among intercellular junctions.
