Abstract:

"A coastal fortification: a sentry stands beside a cannon, but in the foreground three soldiers amuse themselves with a buxom laughing woman; one is a drummer-boy, his drum slung from his back. Another soldier sleeps, his head on a drum; cannon-balls lie beside him, and on the left is a mortar and balls. Behind, two men flirt with a woman whose profile is on the extreme left Above them flies the Royal Standard, with the fleur-de-lis quartering abandoned in 1801, and otherwise incorrect.
