Abstract:
"Folding pl. to 'Hints [ut supra] ... on his modelling a bust of Lord G ****** le' (a verse satire). Nollekens (T.Q.L.) stands in back view placing a bust of Grenville on a shelf at the level of his head, between the busts of Pitt (l.) and Fox (r.). Grenville's eyes are slits; round his neck is a rosary with a cross. Pitt's head, turned to the right., looks over his shoulder at Grenville with a puckered brow ('dignified disgust'). Fox gazes to the left. Two other busts (r. and l.) on brackets look down with displeasure at Grenville. On an upper shelf is a group of antique busts, their expressions registering surprise or cynical amusement. With them is an oval medallion of a monk kneeling before a cross. Below, flanking Nollekens, are two marbles from his collection of antiques: a seated satyr (l.) and a much-damaged torso inscribed 'ΑπΟΛΛωΝΙΟS ΝΕSΤOROS'. Below the design: "And now the point of dress adjusted Methinks I see his Lordship busted And with the Cross of Peter graced Between his quondam Colleagues placed Propose with theirs to join his pate And form a Bust-Triumvirate""--British Museum online catalogue.
