Abstract:
The man on the left was the village chief of Mepe, denoted by the animal skin under his feet. The man on the right was his 'linguist' or headman, who spoke on his behalf. Visitors never spoke directly to the chief, but rather through the multi-lingual headman." (Published in The Gold Coast in Transition, David E. Apter)
