Abstract:

Watercolor drawing of five birds executed on the specially printed title page to an extra-illustrated volume. Arranged in a vertical column, the four birds drawn to the right of the printed text reside within circular spaces created by a twisting, decorative border; the topmost circle contains a flying swallow, with the three circles below showing birds perched on branches. The design extends slightly over the top of the printed text, with the fifth bird, depicted in flight, occupying the space above an extension of the decorative border.
