Also with a poem on verso in Walpole's hand: Without a rival long on painting's throne, Urbino's modest artist sat alone. At last a British fair's unerring eyes, in five short moons contests the glorious prize, Raphael by genuis nurs'd by labour gain'd it, Bingham but saw perfection, and attain'd it. H.W."
Owned by Horace Walpole and hung in the Blue bedchamber and sold at the Strawberry Hill sale, xi.110. Bought by Newman Smith, £1.1.0. Bernard Quaritch notes that the picture came from Gran Udern of Lawrence & co., Auctioneers, Crewkerne, Somerset to Mr. Toby Rodgers and then to Quaritch who sold it to W.S. Lewis, December 1974.
