YUAG catalogue note: John Tudgay, possibly the "I. Tudgay" who signed a number of earlier works, was a British marine painter active from ca. 1836 to 1865. The prestigious Tudgay family of marine artists worked in London and produced an impressive body of ship portraiture, often collaborating with one another while taking singular commissions, as well. Frederick Tudgay, thought to be the youngest Tudgay brother (born 1841), is the most well-known.
