Sack catalogue description: Pair of Chippendale walnut and gilded mirrors with original cartouche ornaments, the broken arch tops have acanthus carving trailing the arch with egg-and-dart borders ending in carved rosettes with pendants, the mirrors are bordered by superb leaf and floral carving of cyma outline with an egg-and-dart outer border; the scrollboards and bases have applied gilded cartouches, the backplates for sconces are the original and the mirrors retain their original gilding. New York or English. History of descent is supported by a number of family letters and geneologies that will be provided to the purchaser: 1) Hendrick Rutgers married Catherine De Peyster in New York in 1730; 2) Mary Rutgers, fifth child of Hendrick and Catherine Rutgers (note: her brother was Henry Rutgers, founder of Rutgers University), married Stephen McCrea (born 1755), who was surgeon in Battle of Ticonderoga, Revolutionary War; 3) Mary McCrea, daughter of Stephen and Mary McCrea, married Timothy Hedges; 4) Mary Rutgers McCrea Hedges (born Aptil 4, 1819), married Abraham Bogart Conger, 1836; 5) Wilhemina De Peyster Knauth, granddaughter of Mary Conger. The mirrors were on loan to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston until the end of 1968.
