Sack catalogue description: Chippendale corner chair fashioned of San Domingan mahogany, four cabriole legs ending in high taloned claw-and-ball feet, the frontal knee rounded to conform to the rounding of the seat frame; deeply serpentined horseshoe seat, three serpentine arm supports enclosing interlaced pretzel splats of deeply spooned profile, continuous arm with dished elbow rests and scrolled terminals; the chair retains the original brown leather slip seat covering with the contemporary name "Brown" on the maple seat frame, the deep brown finish is the original with great depth, the light sapwood is carefully chosen to highlight the knees in lieu of carving. This chair was one of a pair made for John Brown of Providence, Rhode Island; it was given by him to his daughter, Sarah Brown, who married Karl Herreschoff of Bristol, Rhode Island. The chair was sold about ten years ago by Mrs. Sidney Herreschoff of Bristol and purchased by Israel Sack, Inc.; it was sold to Lansdell K. Christie by Israel Sack, Inc., and repurchased from his estate. The attribution to John Goddard seems assured since it is known that John Goddard was the favorite craftsman for the Brown brothers of Providence, Rhode Island; this chair was one of a pair made for John Brown of Providence. The mate to this chair, property of Norman Herreschoff, is on loan at the John Brown House in Providence, Rhode Island. This chair was also exhibited in "American Art from American Collections: Decorative Arts, Paintings, and Prints of the Colonial and Federal Periods" at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1963.
