Sack catalogue description: Queen Anne mahogany claw-and-ball foot side chair, the crest centered by a carved shell in bold relief, vase-shaped pierced splat; wavy stiles, claw-and-ball feet with distinctive ribbed knuckles, the chair is in the finest original condition including webbing and linen undercovering. Attributed to John Goddard; the claw-and-ball feet of this chair, with their distinctive ribbed knuckles, relates to those on the Jabez Bowen tea table and the John Brown corner chair. Two other examples of this form, but not of this set, are known to us: one is in the Karolik collection at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, illustrated in Hipkiss, The M. and M. Karolik Collection, p. 142, pl. 80; the other is in the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Stone.
