Notes:: Sack catalogue description: Original catalogue description (May 1978) – Hepplewhite mahogany, birch and cherry four-post bed, superbly designed footposts with finely inlaid urns, the drapery has a diamond checkered motif at each point with that motif repeated on the line-inlaid legs and the top and crossbanded cuff; the bulbous reeded posts are tastefully swelled, the bowed tester, rails and shaped headboard are the originals, the footposts are turned in simpler fashion; beautiful amber patina, the diamond checkered inlay is a favored motif in Portsmouth furniture. Updated catalogue description (1990) – This bed was sold by Israel Sack in the 1950s and recently reacquired. Israel Sack always considered it the finest Hepplewhite bed he ever owned.
