Sack catalogue description: William and Mary cherry Spanish-foot side chair with finely carved crest, ball-and-ring frontal stretcher, medial, side and rear stretchers showing early Queen Anne influence; turned legs, caned back and seat, scrolled apron. This chair belonged to Colonel John Stoddard (1682–1748) of Northampton, Massachusetts; it was loaned by a descendant to the Harvard Tercentenary Exhibit in 1936, held at the Fogg Art Museum and is illustrated in that catalogue, no. 216. An inventory of John Stoddard's estate from December 1748 mentions "nine cain chairs 34.0."
